What Is Trichology? Scalp & Hair Analysis in Austin
Hair loss is more than a cosmetic issue, it often reflects deeper changes happening within your body. Trichology is the science of the scalp and hair, and it plays a key role in identifying the why behind hair loss.
Amanda is certified through the U.S. Trichology Institute (USTI), one of the nation’s leading organizations in trichological education. This background allows her to assess the condition of your scalp, recognize signs of imbalance, and recommend personalized, non-invasive solutions that go beyond surface-level treatment.
Whether your hair thinning is sudden or gradual, trichology-based support provides a professional, compassionate path forward.
Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women & Men
Common causes of hair loss include:

Pre-Menopause & Menopause
Hormonal fluctuations can lead to sudden thinning or slowed growth.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
Often linked to hormonal imbalances that disrupt the hair growth cycle.

Androgenetic Alopecia
A genetic condition that affects both men and women as they age.

Stress, Nutritional Deficiencies, or Autoimmune Conditions
Internal factors that can impact scalp health and hair strength.
Postpartum Shedding
Shedding often starts two to five months after delivery. The follicles stay alive, so this phase is temporary. Read: Postpartum Hair Loss in Austin
GLP-1 Related Thinning
Rapid weight loss on medications like Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro can trigger shedding two to four months in. Read: Hair Loss After Ozempic

What Happens at Your Trichology Consultation
Your first visit is a calm, one-on-one appointment in my studio inside Reve Salon on S. Lamar. There is no pressure and no one-size-fits-all plan. Here is what to expect:
- Your story first. We talk through your hair history, your daily routine, the products you use, and any health changes or medications that could be affecting your hair.
- A scalp and hair assessment. Using specialized tools, I look closely at your scalp, your follicles, any inflammation or buildup, and the condition of the hair you have now.
- Plain-language findings. I walk you through what I see and what is most likely behind your thinning, so you leave with real answers.
- A plan we build together. We choose your next step as a team, whether that is hair re-growth support, a topper, hand-tied extensions designed for fine hair, or a combination.

Trichologist or Dermatologist?
A trichologist and a dermatologist play different roles. As a certified trichologist, I focus on the health of your scalp and hair: assessing what is happening, explaining it clearly, and offering non-medical support and solutions. A dermatologist or your physician is a medical doctor who can diagnose medical conditions, order tests, and prescribe medication.
If anything I see points to something that needs a medical evaluation, such as sudden or patchy hair loss, a scalp that is painful, red, scaly or scarring, or signs that bloodwork for thyroid, iron or hormone levels would help, I will recommend that you see a dermatologist or your physician. I am happy to keep supporting your scalp and hair care alongside the plan they put in place.

Trichology and Thinning Hair FAQs
What does a trichologist do, and is there one in Austin?
A trichologist specializes in the health of the scalp and hair. I am a Certified Clinical Trichologist, certified through the U.S. Trichology Institute, and I see clients with thinning hair at my studio on S. Lamar in South Austin.
Do I need a referral to book a trichology consultation?
No referral is needed. Start with the short intake form on my New Client page. I review it, then reach out with next steps and a link to schedule your one-on-one consultation.
Is postpartum or GLP-1 related shedding permanent?
In most cases this kind of shedding is temporary, because the follicles stay alive and can grow again. If your shedding is heavy, patchy, or not settling down, check in with your physician as well.
Should I see a dermatologist instead of a trichologist?
If your hair loss is sudden or patchy, or your scalp is painful, red or scaly, see a dermatologist or your physician. I will tell you if I think you need one, and I can support your scalp and hair care alongside their plan.
What can I do about thinning hair while I wait for regrowth?
Many clients use a hair topper or hand-tied extensions designed for fine or thinning hair to add coverage and fullness right away, while we work on scalp health and regrowth in the background.
